If you want the ‘scoop’ on something, check Facebook or Twitter, right? Unfortunately though, the person sharing the latest ‘news’ may not be the right person. If it’s not your news to share, wait and let the person share his or her story first.
Here’s a great example: you were lucky enough to be at the restaurant when your best friends Mary and Tom became engaged. You immediately take a picture of the happy couple and the ring, and then share the excitement on Facebook. But wait… Tom hasn’t told his family the good news yet, and both his mom and sister are your FB ‘friends’. As you can imagine, a wonderful and exciting evening has just gotten a little uncomfortable and awkward for those who weren’t present for the occasion and are not yet ‘in the know’.
By rushing to congratulate, or even offer condolences (in the event of a death or tragedy), you may be unintentionally sharing personal, and private, information that friends or family aren’t quiet ready to share with the world.
If you have a question about whether or not you should share the ‘scoop’, ask before your post! Or better yet, wait for your friend to post their news and ‘share’ it from their feed.
