Manner Monday®: Labor Day

As seen on:
by Carey Sue Vega in Etiquette, Family, Manner Monday, Manners

When it comes to Memorial Day and Labor Day, does anyone else get confused with which holiday falls when?  Yep, me too!  A dear friend, Vonne, taught be an easy way to remember.  M = May and Memorial Day.  Then you can think L = Last day to go swimming and Labor Day (most public pools close after Labor Day weekend).  I hope that helps… I know it’s already helped me!  🙂

In honor of ‘Labor Day’… I’m enjoying some down time with my family.  I hope you enjoy this post from the archives:

One of our High School students asked us the other day about Labor Day.  They were thrilled to have the school holiday, but weren’t exactly sure why they were getting the day off.  I promised them I would repost a previous Manner Monday with the history of the holiday…

Labor Day is a National Holiday dating back to 1882 when the first “Labor Day Celebration”, or street parade, took place in New York City as a way to honor the American labor force.  In 1894, it became a federal holiday.

Ask your friends and family to share their definition of Labor Day and more than likely they will respond with something similar to, “it’s the official end of summer”; or you may get another popular answer, “it’s the kickoff to Football season”.

What does Labor Day mean to you?

  • An extra day to rest and recoup from all of your hard labor?
  • The end of summer?
  • Football season has begun?

Whatever it means to you… take some time to thank the people in your life that “labored”, or who currently “labor”, to provide for you.

I’d love to know how you celebrate Labor Day!

Each year we build on the previous year as we add to the curriculum.  We have many students who continue with us each season, from our Level 5 (5th grade) program through our Passport (High School) Program.  Our goal with the continuous exposure, and gentle reminders, of the courtesies we teach over consecutive years – is to assist you in raising well-mannered young adults.

  • Continued Exposure:  Just as continued exposure to athletics and school homework reaps rewards; continued exposure to the social skills taught in our program will provide lifelong lessons that will benefit your child throughout the classroom and into the boardroom.
  • Benefits and Rewards:  One of the biggest rewards of our students returning year after year, is the virtual ‘light bulb’ that seems to turn on and stay on; the students are really starting to get it and they are very proud of themselves.  Their confidence is building.  We’ve highlighted some of our graduating seniors on my blog at www.CareySueVega.com/?s=senior+spotlight

5-8th Grade Levels:  Tuition for the 2014-2015 season is $425.
