Manner Monday: Father’s Day

As seen on:

Father’s Day is Sunday, June 19.  As I was thinking about the Holiday, I was curious as to its origin.  According to Wikipedia, “The first observance of Father’s Day actually took place in Fairmont, West Virginia on July 5, 1908. It was organized by Grace Golden Clayton, who wanted to celebrate the lives of the 210 fathers who had been lost in the Monongah Mining disaster several months earlier in Monongah, West Virginia, on December 6, 1907. It’s possible that Clayton was influenced by the first celebration of Mother’s Day that same year, just a few miles away. Clayton chose the Sunday nearest to the birthday of her recently deceased father.” … Wow, I had no idea!

If you are lucky enough to spend time with your father, or a father figure, I’m thinking the best gift of all for anyone is time and attention.  Turn off the cell phones and just spend time with him.  Visit, listen, talk, and laugh… good old-fashioned communication:  just like they used to do in the “olden days”.

What are your plans this Father’s day?  Please leave a comment below and share how you plan to honor your father (or father figure) this Sunday.
